On November 6, 2021, Captain Steve DesRuisseaux of the Manchester NH Fire Department received 3rd degree burns over 40% of his body while trying to rescue residents trapped in a multifamily building. DesRuisseaux was overcome with flames during a flashover, and a breathing device got caught on a ladder, trapping him as he dove out the window to escape the blaze. It was determined at a local hospital that second- and third-degree burns covered about 40% of his body. He was then flown to Mass General and is currently in recovery while being treated for his injuries. Capt. DeRuisseaux and his wife, Colleen have been married for 24 years. They have two children, Megan age 19 and Jack age 17.
“The actions of the crews last night went above and beyond the call of duty, and Captain DesRuisseaux’s efforts were nothing short of heroic. Captain DesRuisseaux’s actions led to the rescue of six people and is a true testament to Steve’s professionalism,” Battalion Chief Dave Flurey said in a statement.
We will be holding a fundraiser for Capt. Steve DesRuisseaux and matching all donations up to $10,000.
